SOURCE: CECity.com, Inc.
5:54AM, April 18, 2006

Homestead, Pennsylvania, April, 18, 2006 -- The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and SOMA Medical Education Company are pleased to announce the launch of their jointly sponsored e-learning CME activity entitled Prevention of Acute Radiation Induced Proctosigmoiditis (RIPS). This activity is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Salix Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Available online at http://www.cemedicus.com/rips, the program informs participants about the prevalence of acute radiation induced proctosigmoiditis, and describes current and prior approaches to its management. Recent advances in amelioration of this toxicity are described in the context of earlier failed trials, with an emphasis on unique mechanisms of the agents employed. Radiation Oncologists, Oncologists and other healthcare professionals who treat patients receiving pelvic radiotherapy are invited to participate in the free program led by Program Chairperson, Christopher D. Jahraus, M.D., Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to recognize the prevalence of acute radiation induced proctosigmoiditis (RIPS) among pelvic radiotherapy patients and the need for specific questioning regarding such symptoms, describe the likely reasons most prior trials of pharmacologic agents for RIPS have failed; differentiate the structural and mechanistic similarities and differences between the past and present agents utilized in RIPS/radiation enteritis treatment, and define the supporting evidence for current treatments and treatment strategy in RIPS prevention.
