CME ACTIVITY ANNOUNCEMENT The Vitamin D and Calcium Crisis: Strategies to Improve Bone Health. AMA PRA Category 1™, AOA, AAFP, ACPE, ANCC, CMCC Credit

Lexington, Kentucky -- Creative Education Concepts, Inc. and AMCP Horizons are pleased to announce a FREE CE activity entitled The Vitamin D and Calcium Crisis: Strategies to Improve Bone Health., now available online at www.cemedicus.com/improvebonehealth.

Twenty-five million Americans are currently living with osteoporosis. This number could potentially double due to the increasing aging population. Hip fractures are another serious issue associated with bone health and have the potential to triple in numbers by the year 2020. Large-scale trials and exciting new research have confirmed the value of vitamin D and its potential in reduction of bone loss and bone fractures. Research has also shown that high value of vitamin D in calcium absorption and proper muscle functioning. Furthermore, there is evidence that suggests vitamin D may help prevent type 1 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and many common cancers.

The goal of this educational strategy is to increase attention and understanding of the role of nutrition, calcium and vitamin D in bone health in order to prevent and reduce bone disease and promote evidence-based information to encourage these changes. Three profession-based case studies are presented in this activity to aid healthcare professionals in their practice to reverse this costly, devastating trend.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
● Improve their patient care by being able to summarize for health care providers the importance of proper nutrition, calcium, and vitamin D for good bone health.
● Promote scientific, evidence-based bone health data to educate the health care community on strategies to improve diagnosis and prevention of vitamin D and calcium deficiency
● Recognize the public health issue associated with patients with vitamin D and calcium deficiency to improve outcomes in patient health.
● Address steps to improve patient bone health through better diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring through the lifespan.

Accreditation & Support Statement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Creative Educational Concepts, Inc. and AMCP Horizons and is supported through an educational grant from Merck & Co., Inc and Pharmavite LLC.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit: Creative Educational Concepts, Inc. is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CEC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Prescribed Credit: This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 2.5 prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
AOA Category 2b credit: CME activities approved for AAFP credit are recognized by the AOA as equivalent to AOA Category 2b credit.

ACPE Credit: Creative Educational Concepts, Inc. (CEC) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This activity has been assigned ACPE #245-999-06-146-H01 and will award 2.5 contact hours (0.25 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit.

ANCC Credit: Eastern Kentucky University, the Division of Continuing Education and Development, designates this educational activity for 3.0 contact hours. This activity will provide 3.0 contact hours of nursing credit.

CMCC Credit: This activity has been approved by the Commission for Case Manager Certification Approval # 7230251885 through 11/20/07 for up to 2.0 clock hours of continuing education credit.
