Southern Medical Association Presents 16th Conference on Sleep Disorders and Pulmonary Medicine in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

SOURCE: Southern Medical Association
11:34AM, February 21, 2008

Birmingham, Alabama – The Southern Medical Association (SMA), will present the 16th Annual Sleep Disorders and Pulmonary Medicine Conference at The Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on April 10-13, 2008. Nausherwan K. Burki, MD, PhD, FCCP, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT is presiding as director of this meeting, along with co-director, Bashir A. Chaudhary, MD, FCCP, Professor Emeritus at the Medical College of Georgia, Sleep Institute of Augusta in Augusta, GA. Other distinguished faculty include Rolando Berger, MD, FCCP, Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, KY; Richard K. Bogan, MD, FCCP, Chief Medical Officer, Sleep Med, Inc., Columbia, SC; Richard Castriotta, MD, Professor and Division Director, Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Houston, TX; Nancy A. Collop, MD, FCCP, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director, Johns Hopkins Hospital Sleep Disorders Center, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland; Guillermo Gutierrez, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine & Anesthesiology, Director, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, The George Washington University, Medical Faculty Associates, Washington, DC.

This four-day conference is designed to provide state-of-the-art treatment protocols and clinical strategies for the management of patients with sleep disorders and other prominent concerns in pulmonary diseases, including COPD, community-acquired pneumonia, asthma, in-patient management of pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases and others. The practice of assessing the burden of disease by cataloging subjective complaints and objective information under one organ system is increasingly inadequate in medicine, and the model of sleep and breathing epitomizes the necessity for a multidisciplinary understanding of disease and the metrics that must be used to assess it. This conference will address the interactions between sleep and breathing and how this interaction influences understanding of disorders.

This Medallion Level CME program is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, sleep technologists, and other healthcare professionals specializing or certified in the areas of Pulmonary Medicine, Chest Diseases, Thoracic Medicine and Sleep Disorders. The conference may also be of benefit to specialists in Internal Medicine, Family or General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine, Allergy, and Cardiology and others.

The Southern Medical Association designates this educational activity for 24 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Southern Medical Association, provider of Medallion Level CME, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. SMA, a physician member association, advocates for improved health for every individual focusing on greater access to care, healthcare research, and disease prevention and treatment through a multi-specialty, interdisciplinary approach. Southern Medical Association supports physicians and other healthcare professionals to practice the highest standards of the art and science of medicine. SMA fosters the highest level of continuing medical education, professional services, collegiality across specialties, and leadership development for its members.
