Live da Vinci® Robotic-Assisted Prostatectomy

SOURCE: OR-Live, Inc.
8:52AM, April 29, 2008

Prostate cancer, when caught early, is highly treatable and studies show the most effective treatment is surgery. To help educate patients about the most innovative surgical option available, Methodist North Hospital will present a live surgical webcast featuring a robotic prostatectomy surgery, a minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer, Tuesday, May 13, at 2 p.m. Viewers can watch Ravi D. Chauhan, M.D., and Robert A. Donato, M.D., perform a prostatectomy and learn more about the procedure from Richard M. Pearson, M.D.

"Robotic surgery has really revolutionized prostatectomy," said Richard Pearson, M.D., a urologist and surgeon with The Conrad/Pearson Clinic. "The principles of robotic surgery are based on surgeons' experiences with open surgery so the robot-assisted movements are very natural and it is absolutely fantastic to have an extremely clear, three-dimensional image that allows you to really see the distances between anatomical structures."

A robotic prostatectomy involves five tiny incisions about the size of a dime. The robot's arms are passed through these openings called ports and hold a camera and surgical instruments. The surgeon sits at a console a couple of feet away from the operating table and looks into a viewfinder at a three-dimensional image sent from the camera inside the patient. Using joystick controls just below the screen, the surgeon moves them to manipulate the surgical instruments to perform the surgery.

"Usually after operating a minute or two, the surgery becomes a virtual experience," said Dr. Pearson. "It is so natural the surgeon actually thinks he is inside the patient while he is operating."

The da Vinci® Surgical System at Methodist North Hospital is the most advanced robotic surgical system available. It incorporates the latest advancements in robotic-assisted technology and provides surgeons with greater visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision, control and superior ergonomics.
