Adjustable Gastric Band Laparoscopic Weight Loss Surgery for Morbid Obesity

SOURCE: OR-Live, Inc.
4:49PM, July 17, 2008

The first webcast of weight-loss surgery using a new gastric band will be presented by The Hospital of Central Connecticut and OR-Live on Aug 6 at 6 p.m. The procedure, utilizing the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band and the latest laparoscopic techniques, will be performed by Dr. Carlos Barba. Narration will be in both English and Spanish.

"The REALIZE band is one of the newest options in weight loss surgery," said Barba. It is similar to other laparoscopic bands, he explained, but offers additional benefits to patients both before and after surgery, such as goal-setting, meal planning, nutrition counseling and a host of on-line tools designed to promote enduring weight-loss success. Such benefits, provided by the device manufacturer, Ethicon Endo-surgery, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, mesh well with the hospital's comprehensive approach to bariatric surgery and weight loss management. The hospital was recently designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, and Barba is a designated Center of Excellence surgeon.

Narration and commentary will be provided by Dr. David Giles, co-medical director of the hospital's bariatric surgery center.

"We're pleased and excited to offer this exciting opportunity for people—whether they are physicians or potential patients—to view this exciting new gastric banding procedure," said Dr. James Massi, the hospital's chief of surgery. "Public interest in bariatric surgery, particularly gastric banding, continues to skyrocket, given the profound benefits to patients." Weight-loss surgery has been demonstrated to greatly improve health for the morbidly obese. Recent studies have shown that, in many cases, gastric banding can eliminate Type II diabetes, and improve or eliminate other conditions including sleep apnea and asthma.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut offers bariatric surgery and a full array of weight loss programs through its Weigh Your Options® clinical weight loss center.
